The Healing Place Team Dean Smith My life with animals happened quite by chance. At the age of 9, I attended a showing of a movie called "Old Yeller", an epic about a yellow lab. The movie theatre was giving away a dog as a prize.
I collected all the entry forms from anyone who would give me one and entered numerous times. Much to my mother's chagrin, I won "Jet" — supposedly a black lab puppy who at full size was perhaps 15 pounds. She was the first much loved family pet.Jet was followed by my other dear pals: Tabby, Joe, and currently Bodhi, Sinter and Skai. My life has also been enriched by having the pleasure of feline family members — Bear, Mina and Marmalade. When I graduated from the UBC physio school nearly 10 years ago, it seemed logical that I would apply my knowledge to caring for the musculoskeletal issues of animal friends. Nearly four years ago, I took an animal physiotherapy course with Laurie Edge Hughes from Calgary and have since been caring for animals along with my human clientele. I believe that it is vital to look at the whole patient in the health care process. All too often in veterinary care, the animal's musculoskeletal system is neglected or treated only with medication. If your companion stops playing, or becomes "aggressive", it may be spinal or joint pain and that needs to be addressed (just like their owner's pain with measures other than medication). I make sure that there is enough time for each consultation and include you in the decision making and treatment process. Services I can provide for your animal friend:
